Aerial / circus fitness in London on a budget

April 08, 2019 Princess

Aerial fitness is such an expensive hobby. When I first started aerial hoop, it took me a long time to justify the expense. I kept asking myself: how am I going to afford to do aerial hoop? One class can cost about £26! I had to give it up for a while when I was moving jobs and home because I couldn’t pay for it on top of everything else.

But, it’s super addictive! Once you’ve tried aerial fitness, it’s very difficult to give it up. On top of that, you end up trying out other disciplines and you end up being sucked into the circus scene. With London being one of the most expensive cities to live in, here are some tips for pursuing aerial / circus fitness on a budget.

Smaller studios

Flying Fantastic is one of the more established aerial schools in London so naturally the prices are higher. One credit costs £26 but it’s cheaper if you buy in bulk: 10 credits is £200 meaning each class costs £20. These credits can be used over 3 months.

London Dance Academy is one of the smaller studios but have classes from £17.50-£21, depending on length of the class (60 min or 90 min). The studio is lower but if you’re just starting out it’s probably more reassuring to be closer to the floor! Personally, I aspire to go to Flying Fantastic, but probably when I have a larger budget and when I feel like I’ve levelled up enough to make the most out of it!

ClassPass

ClassPass is also not a cheap membership. The price can be up to £65 a month so by all means I’m not saying this is cheap at all. However, when compared with the cost of buying blocks of classes directly from the studio, it does work out to be a lot cheaper – in some instances around 50% cheaper! It’s worth trying this out and it also gives you flexibility to try different disciplines. There’s also the option to downgrade to a £35 subscription, which gives you fewer credits per month, but the classes still work out cheaper than if you were to buy direct or as drop-in.

Usually if you buy classes in blocks, you are tied to those course dates. So, if you can’t make the class or you want to go on holiday, you will waste that class and your money. With ClassPass, you just book when you need to go, so it’s much more convenient and works better for your schedule. Read more about some of the studios I tried with ClassPass in my blog post about my week of aerial fitness.

MoveGB

I haven’t tried MoveGB yet but I think they have some pole classes… I will update with more info once I’ve tried it out. However, in terms of budget-friendly aerial fitness, they are doing an offer where you can try out new classes for £1 per week (caveat: you can only attend that class once). Definitely will give this a try!

Gymbox

This is the route that I opted for. Since Gymbox offer aerial hoop, trapeze and circusfit classes in their Aerial series, it meant that I could attend as many of these classes I wanted. On top of that, you get access to their awesome gym. I had my eye on Gymbox for a long time but it’s a bit difficult to actually make the move with them. Everytime I enquired about prices, they would not really tell me outright how much the membership cost. It takes some coaxing for them to send you their price table, which I found quite shady and annoying at first, to be honest. There’s a lot of different prices depending on different factors as well like location, student discount, length of contract etc. I also had to make sure I picked the locations that offered aerial classes because not all the gyms have the same classes.

In the end, I set up an alert on Gumtree for people selling their gym memberships. Quite a lot of people sign up for the 1 year contract to get the better deal or because they had corporate discount but end up changing their mind before the contract is up. I luckily came across someone selling their founding membership which meant that the membership was just £65 a month! I say “just” like it’s such a small amount. It is of course very expensive – I definitely call Gymbox a bougie gym! It took me a long time to just go for it and get the membership.

But again, this is much cheaper than if I were to get classes elsewhere, plus I also have access to a load of different classes on top of aerial! I would absolutely recommend watching out for people selling their membership on Gumtree and swiping up a good deal. Usually the membership price can go up to £100s so knowing that I was saving about £40 a month made me glad I didn’t sleep on this ad. They’re opening up a lot of new branches so if you can get in there on a founding membership, it’s so worth it! They also do a lot of promotions for a month free, or no joining fee, or corporate discount (speak to your HR department), all worth keeping an eye out for if you’re interested in this!

Making ends meet

Bottom line is, aerial and circus fitness is an expensive investment. It’s understandable because the rigging, equipment, space and insurance drives up the cost a lot. At the end of the day, I was really passionate about pursuing aerial hoop (and now I’ve branched out to trapeze and silks!) and I made adjustments to my lifestyle to shift my budget so that I could pay for this. I cut down on how much I ate out for dinner and I always meal prep my lunches for work. It’s with small adjustments like this that make my aerial dream possible!

Aerial fitness every day for a week

March 21, 2019 Princess
I’m totally in love with aerial fitness. I’ve been taking aerial hoop and trapeze classes weekly for about the past 6 months at Gymbox but I’ve always wanted to try other aerial apparatus. Recently, my friend told me about a ClassPass promotion and invited me to try a spinning pole class with her (linked my referral code, you could get a free trial and I'd get a discount!) Since I needed to use up my credits within a short time, I ended up booking myself into an intense week of aerial fitness.

Off the bat, I’m gonna say I didn’t technically do aerial EVERY day of the week. But it was a week of related exercises plus 1 rest day so I’m going to say it still counts!

Monday – Spinning pole (elementary-intermediate)

ClassPass: Ecole de Pole, Camden

My first class of the week was spinning pole in Camden. The location is a bit tucked away in a back street so it was kinda difficult to find in the dark but it was a nice little studio. The instructor was really great, very encouraging and lovely. Her manner and her voice really reminded me of Julie Andrews and I mentally gave her the nickname of Mary Poppins of Pole. She taught us some really cool combos. Even though my friend and I hadn’t done pole in a long time, I think elementary-intermediate level was still fine for us since we’ve been doing a lot of strength and conditioning for aerial hoop.

If you have motion sickness, spinning pole might not be for you. But I really loved the pretty spins and luckily didn’t feel any sickness. I found that pole uses a lot more arm strength than hoop. I feel like maybe hoop is the easiest discipline in aerial fitness because there’s more area to play with and you also have different options to rest certain body parts while still being in the hoop. With pole, you have to be constantly grabbing and holding on the entire time you’re in the air. There’s no way to sit prettily to regain your breath and anything you do on the pole you have to engage fully with your muscles. Plus you have the added irritation of sweaty hands so you have to keep wiping the pole so you don’t slip. It’s really really hard! Gravity is not your friend. I felt like my dominant arm and shoulder had a massive wake-up call for the week. Despite that, I really liked the fun combos our instructor taught us. All in all we really enjoyed this class, which is why we booked on again for next week!

Tuesday – Contortion

Gymbox

Not technically aerial because there is no flying involved, but flexibility is a key part in aerial fitness so it’s an important aspect to train! Although the name of the class sounds really intense, we don’t do advanced contortion exercises, it’s more basic and we focus on stretches to get front splits, middle splits, and back-bends. This week we stretched for our middle splits. I’ve gotten a lot closer to the ground than when I first started, but still a long way to go… I thought I had made some new progress this week but actually when I checked my stories archive on insta, there’s not much visible difference.

Wednesday – Spinning pole (beginners)

ClassPass: Kelechnekoff, Peckham

This time I booked onto a beginners spinning pole class. This was partly because I needed to find a class that didn’t clash with some other prior commitments. The class was at Kelechnekoff in Peckham. It was slightly easier to find but Citymapper took me on some ‘interesting’ walk through some dark streets and a quiet park. The classes are held in a community centre which looks like it’s converted from a Victorian school building. The entrance wasn’t lit so I thought I was in the wrong place! You have to ring up to be let in, then you have to wait in the reception area until class or until someone lets you in through the second doors. I think I was the first to arrive for my class so there wasn’t anyone else around. The reception area was lit but it was a bit creepy being alone there! 100% sure that place would be haunted if you stayed there overnight haha. Luckily some other people showed up for the class and livened it up until class. It’s quite a small studio so for spinning pole, you have to be extra careful in case you kick the wall / other people / yourself. I found 2 ‘safe’ spots in the room where I could stand out of the reach of any stray spinning legs while I waited my turn.

We learnt some basic moves while spinning like the storm pose, chair pose and back spin. I don’t know if I got all those names right… I felt like this really worked out my arms again. It was a little frustrating to not be really good at the basic moves though, especially after quite a progressive session in the elementary class I took on Monday. I’m just impatient! I guess the lesson here is you really have to get the foundations down first, doh. I was really struggling to master the push-and-pull for the arms. Still an enjoyable class and the classmates were all very friendly and supportive. I could tell that they’re all very close and have a good vibe together so if you go as regular, it’s definitely a place for making new friends.

Thursday – Aerial silks

ClassPass: Flying Fantastic, Battersea

I’ve always wanted to try aerial silks! This is the one that I really wanted to progress to after doing hoop. Personally, it always seemed like the hardest out of them all because you have to deal with all the regular suspects of aerial fitness, plus you have to not slip out of silks and know how to knot yourself and the silks into pretzels! I took this class at Battersea’s Flying Fantastic. The venue was also a community centre but this one seemed more like a big church hall so it could carry the high silks. It was nice that this class was for all levels because you could learn beginner stuff but also get to see some really awesome advanced stuff too. This was one of the longer classes too so I felt like you really get to try a lot of different things a few times as well as get to do a decent warm up and cool down. I thought the instructors were all really good at explaining the moves. Silks requires even more mental gymnastics with the added element of having to tie your foot into grips. I did feel like the instructors’ vibes were in general a little bit sad though? I can’t quite put my finger on why I felt that… maybe they were just super chilled?

What I wasn’t expecting from silks is the pain in your feet. The silks squish your feet so much that you’re basically footbinding in the air. It hurt so much. We were also on a thinner material silk which is better for more advanced dancers, since you have less friction, but really difficult for beginners! We learnt to climb but it was near impossible as a newbie to do it on our slippery silk. When we tried the thicker one, it was much squisher and grippy, so it was a lot easier to do all the things we learnt! We tried out a few different moves like figurehead (like the statue at the front of a ship), big walk back, inversion on a sling. It was interesting to learn how to tie the silk around the feet and the techniques. Even though it was all basic moves, it was very interesting to learn since it was all brand new to me! I really loved it so I’m sad I won’t be able to take any more lessons in silks in the near future. Some day!!!

Friday – Aerial hoop

Gymbox

Aerial hoop is my weekly jam. I’ve been taking aerial hoop classes at Gymbox for 6 months now. We did a really intense warm up. Ophelie generally KILLS us in the first 15 minutes of the class with some crazy conditioning. I used to have to give up about 3 quarters of the way through but my endurance has improved since I started and I can just about keep up until the bitter end… We did the warm up completely to a Prodigy playlist and it really does get you pumped. In this class I managed to unlock a new skill! Doing a straight arm straddle was impossible for me before, but in this class, with Ophelie’s cue of’ arms-core-arms’, I was finally able to pull up into the straddle from a low hang now! So excited about this and a great round up of my week. We also learnt a new split move. My favourite aerial moves always have splits involved. Still working on getting my splits all the way to the ground.

Saturday – Static trapeze

Gymbox

My final aerial class for the week! I’ve also been doing trapeze every week since I joined Gymbox. I think trapeze is the hardest class because you have your own trapeze meaning you have so much extra time in the air. I’m always exhausted after trapeze class. It’s really one that pushes you to the limit because you need so much strength to stay in the air on such a small surface area!

Adrienne’s conditioning and warm up is also very difficult. Another improvement I noticed was that I can now do 2 consecutive straddles pulling up into short arm hold. I don’t have much arm strength so I was never able to get back up after doing one straddle. It’s not a massive improvement but definitely a noticeable one! Even doing 2 in a row is super difficult!

Adrienne taught us a new trick where you wrap your leg up in the rope and then do a straddle. It looks a bit like a silks move but I think it might be more painful because the rope is so hard! This move had us puzzled for a long time because there’s a lot of twisting and turning. Definitely mental gymnastics involved. The problem is, once you make it into the twist, it pinches your leg and freaking HURTS. And then you need to figure out how to unravel yourself! I was stuck for so long in absolute pain. It’s hard to stop yourself from panicking in that situation because you’re quite high off the ground, stuck, and in so much pain! Usually you can just jump down when something hurts but because I was coiled up in the rope, I was completely trapped! My irrational brain was calculating whether it would hurt more to stay in that position or just to rip my foot off to let my leg down haha. I was sooo happy to finally figure this move out! It’s so pretty, next time I need to try to do it quicker and with better flow. I only managed to do it on one side because by the time I attempted the other side, I’d lost all my grip strength. My forearms were SWOLE.

Sunday – Rest and reflect

BED

Surprisingly, I didn’t feel any muscle ache the whole week until today! Even with all the intense upper body workout I was doing almost every day, the DOMs did not hit me until now, and also not very hard! I take that as a good sign that my muscles are getting used to holding my body weight and that I’m getting stronger. I feel like the strength and improvement really showed on my final two days. Maybe trying out the other disciplines forced me to use my muscles in slightly different ways which helped me to unlock some of the skills that I’d never been able to do previously? Or maybe doing a whole week of aerial put me in a hyper focused mindset which helped me reach new heights on my final days of this week since I wanted to end on a high?

Regardless, I definitely felt a marked improvement in my performance after this week. It could be a coincidence and maybe my new achievements were from my accumulated training over the last 6 months. However, I feel like whatever the real reason was, this intense week somehow was the catalyst that helped to push my progress to new levels. So, I would definitely recommend trying to give do a 1 week aerial challenge and see if you get any results!

This experience has totally made me reevaluate my opinion on fitness retreats. I was never really convinced they’d be good for actually improving your training and I just thought it was an opportunity to merge holiday with hobby. Now that I’ve seen that doing an intense week of training can really push your progress, I can totally see why people go on fitness retreats!

I feel like my aerial hoop and trapeze training did help me to pick up the other other disciplines quicker than if I hadn’t been training for a while already. Correlation is not causation and I’m definitely not saying that any of my new achievements were simply from doing one week of classes, but after this week I did feel like I had a ‘level-up’ moment. If you’re in a progression plateau period, doing an intense week of aerial fitness might help lift you out of the rut or help you unlock new skills like it helped me!

3 traditional Chinese crafts used in ‘The Story of Yanxi Palace’

January 21, 2019 Princess
I’ve been obsessed with the period drama The Story of Yanxi Palace (延禧攻略). To fill the void, I’ve been trying to dig deeper behind the scenes of the show. If you haven’t watched Yanxi Palace yet, I highly recommend it! However, you won’t need to have watched the show to appreciate the art and skill behind its costume design.

The Qing Dynasty costumes and accessories were so elegant with muted colours and lowkey headpieces. The understated costume design was very different to the loud and bright costumes that I’m used to seeing. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some fabulousness but the aesthetic of this show was so calm and refreshing. The desaturated tones really reminded me of Nirvana in Fire! I was so happy to come across this variety show which had a segment where the artisans behind the costumes explained a bit about their craft and how it was used in the drama. By the way, this variety show is worth a watch if you’re a fan of the show because your OTP / CP wishes finally get fulfilled plus at the end there’s a really moving beautifully shot music video type of situation where they act out the Empress and Emperor relationship.

1. Silk velvet flower headpieces

The fuzzy hair accessories in Yanxi Palace have definitely been catching people’s eyes. These velvety artificial flowers are actually made of silk and are very delicate.

Master Zhao Shuxian was the first to speak about his craft. He was introduced as the last remaining artisan of Jiangsu Province’s UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Nanjing silk velvet flower.* Master Zhao seemed so happy to be on the show and proud of his art! I thought he was such a cute and endearing ‘uncle’ haha.

He explained the Empress Fuca’s silk velvet headpieces. The piece on the right is called fushou sanduo (福寿三多) which roughly translates to ‘three blessings’. Each item in the piece actually has a lot of deep meaning and thought behind it. The three blessings are:
  1. Peaches with a paradise flycatcher (fancy birb) – symbolises long life
  2. Buddha’s hand fruit (foshou) – a homophone of good fortune and long life
  3. Pomegrante – symbolise fertility because they have full and plump seeds
So, all of three of these symbols put together have an auspicious meaning of good fortune, longevity and plenty of descendants.

The silk velvet flowers are especially characteristic to Empress Fuca because she was an advocate of being frugal and was not extravagant or luxurious so she abandoned pearls and jade to set an example for the harem to economise/cut down on expenditure.

He went on to explain the flower on the left which also has a deeper meaning. Generally, Empress Fuca wears flowers in the peony family because it appears generous and magnanimous, lucky and prosperous. For the concubines, they would generally wear seasonal flowers. The maids would have much simpler and smaller flowers and light colour.

It’s also pointed out that his team has only three people and they made all of these intricate decorations by hand.

He finishes by saying that he hopes that these traditional silk velvet flowers will return to the masses and will become a new folk representative.

I will definitely need to dedicate a whole post just to these silk velvet flowers because they are so beautiful and unique! I’d never seen these before and Master Zhao’s passion and love for his craft really moved me.

2. Jing embroidery

Next we have Master Zhang Hongye, an artisan of the national-level UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage ‘Jing embroidery’ and group leader of the embroidery team. The artisans in the embroidery team had been part of a restoration and renovation project for the Palace Museum before so they were experienced in replicating the traditional embroidery. When the film crew approached her to work on this project, they requested the embroidery to be as historically accurate as possible, with no caveats. Each costume took months to to complete and they used a lot of effort of this show.

All the decorations on the Emperor’s robes were hand embroidered by Master Zhang and her team. The emperor’s suit took a team of eight workers half a year to make due to the difficulty of the complex techniques involved. Apparently the Emperor has a 154,000 yuan suit!

Master Zhang introduces three embroidery techniques that were used on the Emperor’s robe.

They created a 3D effect using bead embroidery. Because each bead needs to be threaded and organised in sequence, it’s a very fiddly and skilled technique.Traditionally, this stitch is called zhi zhu xiu.

For the two dragons inside the motifs, they used ‘seed embroidery’ which is when knots are tied to create the patterns. This is another difficult stitch because the the tension and pressure of the knots need to be consistent and evenly distributed, otherwise the fabric may pucker and will be uneven and may even affect the colours.

Plate gold embroidery – this stitch wasn’t covered in this segment but I found a screenshot of it on a Chinese blog and it is still worth mentioning! I believe they attached gold metal thread by sewing around the metal in a matching colour thread to keep it in place (but not sure if they were real gold or not!)

3. Silk woven fans

World/Global UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Master Gu Jiandong of silk tapestry weaving.

The fans in the drama were all completely made from mulberry silk. The silk of the fan doesn’t have bumps because the design is weaved in by with each individual silk thread so the design is threaded in at the same time as the material is weaved instead of being embroidered.

Concubine Gao’s fan is a replica from the museum consulted from the museum. Actually, the original fan from the Palace Museum was not made completely with the kesi silk tapestry because it had some embroidered elements but the replica for Yanxi Palace was totally weaved. With silk tapestry, you will never get two of the same because each is made individually by hand so each piece will be unique.

Final thoughts

This mini documentary gives you a greater appreciation of the handiwork that goes on behind these beautiful costumes and props which we see only for a few seconds but took so much effort and time and skill to create.

*A different source says the application for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage was actually rejected in 2008 because he was the only person left doing this craft but I guess despite its UNESCO status, I think we can all agree that this craft is at risk of dying out.

Our modern culture of impatience and instant gratification seems to have taken its toll on the number of people that train in these highly skilled and slow crafts. It’s a shame to see these traditional arts dying out. Like they say their goals are to preserve their craft and pass it on to future generations, I hope that the show has piqued the public’s interest in these arts and that more people will take up these crafts.

Episode Recap: The Unbelievable (怪談 逆北道) - China's No.1 Ghost Village (中國第一鬼村) Part 2

December 30, 2015 Princess
Hey look, the Master is dressed up this time! No more repping his rock bands?
Links: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

Part 1

Sifu's feeling fancy today.
Howard says that they originally wanted to stay inside the Wong family mansion to see if they could contact any of their spirits but then they decided to check out the Tai Si chair. Maggie says that the chair was rumoured to potentially cause mysterious death but Spencer says, "Now that I don't believe because Howard has returned to us." Trolllll! Spencer asks the Master if old objects and antiques facilitate contact with spirits. The Master says it's not actually the objects that facilitate contact or store ghosts, but the ghosts return to find the object.

Spencer mentions a ghost story that in old abandoned mansions like the one they're filming in front, they always have a vanity table and mirror belonging to the original female owners and that gradually they will appear in the mirror again. Much glad I didn't recap this episode last night then, my mirror is in front of me and I hate mirrors at night already D: Nopeeeee.
What's left of the chair.
Kinda looks like he's on the loo.
Howard reluctantly sits on the frame of the Tai Si chair and he complains that immediately after sitting on it he can hear noises from outside. The cameraman shines the light over and (quite grumpily might I add) says that they filmed over there a lot of times already and there's nothing there. The voice over says that after sitting on the chair for only 10 seconds, he becomes much more sensitive to the spirit world and his reaction is different to previous shoots. Is he just being paranoid or does the chair actually allow him to see ghosts?
Le shock!
Not a traffic warden.
Nothing over here...
Howard stops and points at an area behind the cameraman and says he can see someone walking over there. When they returned to the bonfire, Howard describes that after sitting on the chair, he immediately felt uneasy and heard footsteps outside.

Back at the discussion, Howard says that the temperature and atmosphere felt completely different after sitting on the chair and he could see lots of black and white forms moving in front of him. Spencer asks him if he felt like he was in another dimension and he answered that it seemed a bit like there was an overlap.
Hi MTV, welcome to my Crib!
Spencer then asks the Master that since the abandoned mansion has some old furniture left behind by past people, would Maggie be able to sit or lie on some of them to see if she could experience any paranormal activity. The Master says theoretically they can but they will need to have a look for some objects. Spencer warns them to be careful because when he entered before, a lot of bats flew out. Eep, I had a bat fly at me once and I was mortified!
Possibly an ancient water basin
They walk around the inside of the mansion and look at some of the rooms. I actually find this more interesting than creepy, I guess the lighting takes away some of the creepiness but also it's so cool to see this old building! It's like Antique Roadshow meets Cribs! They come across what they suspect is the bathroom and speculate that the cement tub was used to hold water.
Knocked over chairs
They enter another section of the mansion and exclaim that this place is actually really big. They find some chairs and also a stool and Spencer asks the Master what they should pick. The Master says some feng shui terminology and reasons something about the corridor and qi and they pick the chairs because he feels they were probably used by the past people.
"Y doeee?!"
Spencer tells Maggie to pick one of the chairs and then they'll leave her alone there to experience and she looks like she's about to cry. Spencer tells her not to blame him, it's the producer who wants her to do it so he has no say. Producer's a troll! Maggie picks one of the toppled over chairs and they put it upright whilst saying "excuse me" and "sorry for disturbing you".

Part 2

The ancient gates!
They apologise for doing housework.
Maggie sits down on her chosen chair and the Master instructs her to present her right hand and the Master puts his hand on hers and tells her to close her eyes. He asks her what does she feel and Maggie says it feels warm. The Master says this is the warm feeling of living qi and tells her remember this feeling.
"What do you feel?" "I feel... like I'm Iron Man..."
Avengers Assemble
He then instructs her to raise her left hand to cover her forehead but not her eyes (possibly covering the 3rd eye?) and to raise her right hand like before to see if she can feel anything paranormal. Maggie asks if spirits appear, what feeling will she have. The Master says he won't tell her, it's up to her to experience for herself. Cryptic, Master is also a troll!
The look of pain or pleasure? loooool
We zip back to the footage from the haunted village. A voice over tells us that when they returned to the Wong family mansion area, the film crew originally wanted Howard to film his solo paranormal experience but Howard keeps refusing and asks to rest. Someone from the film crew asks him to test whether the Tai Si chair really made him see more spirits but Howard's condition seemed to worsen and the temperature decreased again so they went to have something to eat in the hopes of increasing his energy. Whilst getting food, he seemed zombie-like but the film crew told him he can't be like this, the night will be even longer if he's like this. Howard is like a little kid, he's almost begging like a child, it's kind of cute but the film crew obviously think he's being a baby >.< blessss.
Ghost stories by the campfire during his 15 minute rest.
There are no breaks in ghost hunting!
They then sit around the fire and ask No.1 Man how he initially discovered this village and he answers that he accidentally stumbled across it. The strange things he experienced was that they kept dropping/losing things. His hiking companions would notice they'd lost belongings whilst hiking. Another strange occurrence was one of the girls became possessed/haunted. She would laugh and cry randomly and babble nonsense. She'd say that there's someone over there when all of their hiking party were together over here. Her crying were in someone else's voice her eyes went black.
He does not want to be there.
Howard finally goes back inside the Wong mansion for his solo paranormal experience after resting for 15 minutes. He says to his surroundings that he's not trying to disturb them, he's just there for his work. He then starts complaining about being forced to sleep inside that mansion and says it's crazy, he doesn't know why they're forcing him to.
His torch fell out his pocket.
Let there be light!
Suddenly, Howard yelps (he's like a puppy, he yelps a lot hahaa) and his torch falls out of his pocket. Did he yelp because the torch fell out or did it fall out because he moved? Curious... It happens too quick for me to tell. He says there's a person's form and then he lights some candles/incense just to be safe. He says he feels like there's someone watching him and he clutches onto his pillow. So pitiful >.< Bless hahaa.
Feeling the air.
This is where Maggie said she saw the figure moving.
We cut back to Maggie feeling the air and she suddenly calls out for them and she tells them she saw a woman walk across on the other side of the room but she came from a wall. Spencer says that apart from Maggie, there are no other females present. Maggie says that she saw very clearly it was a humanoid but it was all white like a smoke. She says she saw it walk into the end room.

Climbing through your windows, and snatching your people
up.
The alcove where Spencer saw someone watching them from.
They notice that it's a kitchen. Spencer then looks away from the kitchen and says at the top of the stove is an alcove and he said he saw someone watching them from there. Maggie says she can feel a chill coming out from the room. Howard asks whether Spencer also saw a female and he says he didn't see what gender but he just accidentally saw it when he squatted down a bit. The camera crew go inside to film the alcove but then they hear a sound and notice something fell down. The Master says that's actually a place that a ghost lives and the dropped object was a signal of their presence so they shouldn't disturb them any longer and suggests they leave. Maggie then asks if she can still go inside and find them and the Master says basically they've all seen it now so there's no need to carry on disturbing them. Wait why she suddenly become so brave, wanting to go inside and everything? Crazy lady! Howard asks whether they need to do any rituals or offerings and the Master says there's no need because as a spirit that originally lives there, it has its own power. Don't understand what he means by this but I guess he just wants them to gtfo...

Spencer asks the Master whether he thinks the spirit is someone that originally lived at the mansion or is it a nearby lost soul. Master thinks that it's a lost soul because he knows that nearby there's a hospital and if it was a spirit from the original owners, they would have no need to stay in an empty, abandoned house.

Part 3

Spencer asks Maggie what she felt when she was holding her hand out on the chair and she says that she could feel that certain areas were especially cold like a fridge so she would focus on those areas and then she actually saw a translucent humanoid figure go past into the end room. Spencer asks the Master whether after using the hand method, does Maggie need to do any rituals but the Master says it's not necessary because this method uses your mind's original sensitivity and it's just a matter of whether you sense the paranormal or not.
Gagging
SOS
We return to Howard's solo paranormal experience inside the Wong mansion. He suddenly clutches his head and starts sobbing and says "please don't bother me". He then starts heaving and keels over and calls for help.

The voice over says that the film crew notice that the candles on the altar suddenly got much brighter and wondered whether it was a warning from the spirits.
They finally come to his rescue.
The crew enter to help Howard and he's curled in a ball and heaving. Someone says to pat him on the back (I think this is one of the things they do to possessed people?) and they radio for the Master to come.
Casting a spell
Howard keeps trying to throw up and when they manage to sit him back up, he becomes unresponsive and dopey. The Master gets some incense and does some sort of ritual which immediately after, Howard keels over.
Come on, I know he's a bit whingey but you don't have to
spit on him lololol.
The Master takes a mouthful of water and spits it in Howard's face, then hands him the rest of the water to drink. He asks Howard how he's feeling and he says he feels a bit better now. He asks him does he know his own name and Howard says yes and tells him.
Shine bright like a diamond!
The Master tells them they need to leave the area, then has a special mirror tool which is uses to pat Howard's back and yells "leave" (presumably telling the spirit to leave his body). The voice over says that after the Master's rituals, Howard's condition seems to improve but his expression still remained dazed. Seeing Howard's condition, the Master suspects the crew are keeping something from him so they come clean and tell him they left the "sealed" area to find the Tai Si chair.
Giving them a good telling off.
The Master scolds them and says this is a matter of life or death and not about work. They ask the Master what they should do now since they can't stay in that room. The Master says Howard is fine now but they need to wait until sunrise before they can leave.

Back at the discussion, Spencer asks Howard was the experience very grueling and he says watching back the clip, he remembered wondering whether he'd die there because he couldn't breathe and it felt like a really long time before someone came to save him. Maggie asks the Master why the candle flames shook so much when the situation happened. The Master says another "yin qi" (spirit?) was affecting the "yin qi" there which is why the flames were oscillating. Spencer says he thought the flames shook because the spirits were travelling through the flames and the Master says that that could also be the case because spirits follow the light to move from yin to yang. Yeah none of this makes sense to me either but just smile and nod.

Spencer asks about the mainland's Master's "sealing" of the area and why leaving the area would bring problems. The Master says before you make the seal, you have to do a ritual (?). He asks Spencer if he remembers the time they had to throw salt and rice to seal an area and "lock the positive". Once sealed, the ghosts will not be able to enter. Spencer explains that once sealed, outside spirits cannot enter but the ones already within the boundary also cannot leave so it was easy for Howard to be affected.

Spencer says that he noticed Howard pick up the candles from outside (they were stuck into the ground so I think they were supposed to be for lost souls around the area instead of for the spirit at the altar) to light inside and says that's not something he would do. He asks the Master did he break the seal in doing so. The Master says that it's possible because relighting the candle means opening another road for the spirit to travel in. Spencer asks why Howard took the candle to light inside and he explains that the candles inside suddenly went out so it was really dark and he was too scared to sleep so he took the other candles from outside to light inside. Spencer explains he would never leave a "sealed/protected" area and says maybe Howard is not used to filming this show so didn't know but he should never do that again. Howard says won't and he will never return to that haunted village.

Part 4

The hosts say that the crew managed to accidentally record footage of paranormal activity and Howard tells them that apart from the film crew, hiking guides, and Masters, no one else was at the village. Spencer says to pay attention to the form in a hole behind Howard after he got possessed. Also, in a group picture they took, behind the Master, there was an extra person. Ahhhh I hate when an extra person appears in a group photo, lemme just nope straight outta here D:

Howard is describing his experience when he was trying to sleep inside the house. He said he managed to sleep for a little bit. The surroundings were very uncomfortable because behind him there was a hole and in front was the altar and it made him feel like the Old Man was keeping watch on him. He says the moment he yelped, he felt someone tug him which is why he woke up. He didn't feel quite right which was why he lit the candles but not long after, he felt a numb ache on his head. When he curled into a ball, his stomach ached as if there was something walking around inside his stomach. He didn't dare to look around him and it was very hard to breathe. He shouted for help many times and then the crew went inside to help him. He really did, they took their sweet time to check on him, he was just shouting for help and they just strolled in like "whaddup" loool -.-". He also said kept trying to throw up as if he was trying to get rid of something inside.
This scolded puppy
The footage then shows Howard asking the Master is it because his qi was low and the Master replies: 1) Your qi is relatively low, 2) he didn't have any protective tools or rituals on his person, 3) he went into "someone else's" home. Well water doesn't intrude into river water (I'll mind my own business, you mind yours). He says they've intruded on their territory so it's no wonder they are uneasy so will have such a big reaction to him. Howard asks is this an evil consequence and the Master says it's not, it's karma/causality. The Master says, because he entered that place and did intrusive things, that's why he had such a reaction. Poor puppy, he retreats like a puppy that's been scolded aishh. It's not his fault the production team want him to intrude!
The stone is halfway dropping in this screen cap. It looks
blurry because of the motion but on the clip it does fall very
clearly.
The voice over reminds the audience that before Howard's incident, he'd said he felt like he was being watched from the hole (actually, I'm pretty sure he didn't specify from the hole. I think they embellished that on after they thought they'd recorded a shadow in the hole...) Footage is shown of the hole where a stone dropped from a crevice. The voice over says that if it fell because of wind, the candle flames would have moved so what sort of force had made it drop? Erm, I dunno, maybe the force of gravity?
Master's debrief
The ask the Master what could have happened for Howard to suffer like that. The Master says it's because he left the boundary and intruded on someone else's territory. They came to the village as guests so they can't act like they own the place. The Master says they stubbornly decided to leave the sealed area so this incident happened. They asked why Howard's stomach would hurt and the Master replies that it's a spirit teasing him. The voice off camera asks whether they've done a lot of bad things by filming there and the Master says yes. He says when other people talk about you, you'd feel uncomfortable so the spirits would too. He advises them to do more good deeds. They ask him does everyone have karma? The Master says yes and tells them to keep focusing on involving the spirits. Lol, bit hard when that's what the program's about... ^^"
Even ghosts like to selfie.
The voice over says that when they were taking a group photo by the fire, some green flames suddenly appeared and behind the Master, a face appeared to peer over his shoulder. D: Ok I thought it was creepy when I saw the footage at first because the movement looks like someone peeking over the Master's shoulder but then again, it does also look like it could be a bit of smoke or another reflection from the lens like the green glow?
Howard's hair is cute as a bowl cut on the field shoots but he
looks really weird in the discussion shoots. What did they do
to his hair?
Howard says he feels like he had a near death experience and that it might seem a bit exaggerated but the experience was very painful for him and he said it was very memorable because he's never experienced this before. He said this experience was 10x worse than any of his paranormal experiences before.
Finally it's dawn!
Pretty cherry blossom!
"Welcome you to return." Har har someone has a sense of
humour >.<
It's dawn and they collect their things and pay their last respects by burning the rest of the incense and ghost money. They hike back out of the village and Howard says he will never return.

We return to the hosts again and Spencer asks the Master whether the green glow in the photos were paranormal phenomena. The Master says he doesn't think so because even when you use your phone to take photos, you can take photos which have a lot colours and lights (this Master is super down with the kids!) and thinks that it's something to do with the lens. Spencer asks whether Howard knew that the stone fell by itself in the hole and Howard says he didn't know because he'd already left and he was really weak.

They discuss the mysterious translucent figure that appeared behind the Master. Spencer says he thought the figure didn't have much expression and he thought it's difficult to explain. Howard explains that they would never return to the Fung Moon Village, not only because of all the paranormal activity there, but because the hike is extremely dangerous and grueling. The hike back up to the mountain took twice the amount of time because it was going uphill and also the altitude was affecting their breathing.

When I watch the Unbelievable, I do like to put on a jokey, sceptical perspective but it's really because I'm a wimp and I get freaked out by paranormal stuff, yet love to watch these kinds of shows! I tried to give my own explanations for their strange phenomena and I always remind myself that what they broadcast is concerned with entertainment value most so they are most probably acting or faking some of the stuff so that the audience can watch a good show. I saw a lot of comments on the video (on a youtube link) saying how fake The Unbelievable is but I guess that makes is less scary and more entertaining for me. I guess I just like to hear the ghost stories but not to be in one myself >.<
