Since wing was in London again for an assessment day, I decided to gather the troops for a meet up. By which I mean, wing insisted I do the organising because it was my event T_T I was conned into responsibility!
Actually, at dim sum the week before, I'd brought up the subject of oysters because I saw an advert for a bar that did oyster happy hour, i.e., £1 per oyster - absolute bargain! Turns out the majority of the group disliked/were not keen on our slimy mollusc(?) Friends. Nevertheless, since Ian and I were #TeamOyster, I endeavoured to try this oyster happy hour with everyone. I argued my case... was that there were other nibbles on the menu and they could have some drinks too 😉 but my greatest bargaining chip was that Wing would be coming to this meet up and everyone hadn't seen her in a while! As per usual, we turned up late at the venue but our excuse was that we needed to print out 3 books. No seriously, these were heavy duty. Approximately 300 pages.
Anyways, once at The Remedy, we hungrily ordered a dozen and a half (18) and for an extra £6.50 you can get a glass of bubbly. Feeling particularly fancy that day, I opted for my glass of bubbles. I definitely feel like all my alcohol tolerance at uni was to no avail because I felt a little tipsy from one glass. I'm sorry Isambard, I'm a disgrace!
Pretty bubbles and menu. Only nice fancy shot I took. #PhotogNoob |
I don't have many comments to make on the oysters, if you like them, and they cost £1, I don't think you can really go wrong! To be honest, I prefer eating oysters in restaurants than at home because I lack the oyster opening skill. Seriously, it can take half an hour for us to open one. I say "us" because it requires a team effort of my mum and I to tackle this task - armed with s screwdriver and a hammer. Sure, we have a special oyster knife but it never works when we use it. Brute force is the only way! The oysters were a little skinny but to be honest, I prefer them a little more lean because oysters can get filling/sickly (jai) very quick if they're too fatty. Also, my mum always says that oysters are the best when it's a month ending in "Ber" so considering it's July, I was satisfied! We ordered another 24 oysters since boyf and his bro were also in attendance so they slurped up the oysters (literally) with little effort. Even our friend who wasn't keen on oysters ate 5!
Pretty oyster flower! |
NOM, drenched in lemon juice and tabasco! I filmed a couple of "vlog" shots which really failed ^^" |
All gone in the blink of an eye |
Oh, another 2 batches, yes please. |
After having oysters for starter, we went to On The Bab for dinner. I'd heard about it from friends and walked past it a couple times in Shoreditch. However, I didn't know there was one in Covent garden, which is the one we tried. Initially, we were all a bit hangry and stressed because the restaurant was quite busy and they told us there was a 30 minute wait but we actually managed to get a table in 10 minutes. As soon as we walked to our seats, we noticed almost every table had a curious tower with a tap... Filled with beer! I've never seen such a magical contraption! The ice core lights up! Only Ian and I wanted to try the beer tower but we managed to convince everyone to have some too. I'm such a sucker for novelty items, for real. I don't even drink beer but I really wanted to order the beer tower ^^".
"I just remembered I don't like beer""Why did you want the beer tower then??""I dunno it looked cool T_T"
This was my first time trying the popular Korean combo of fried chicken and beer! I always see kdramas and variety shows talking about how good fried chicken goes with beer so I was excited to try. The others weren't convinced... They couldn't understand why fried chicken and beer even goes together. My on the spot answer was that because beer is like "gweilo leung cha" (my parents basically call beer: white people herbal tea. Totally not pc but Asians.) So having beer with fried chicken will make your body have less "heat". All homeopathic Chinese medicine mumbo jumbo but to certain extent, I see where it comes from. (?)
Infamous beer tower |
After much debate, we finally opted for garlic mayo fried chicken and spicy and sweet and a triple sized kimchi jjigae. The kimchi jjigae was really good, I didn't think it was too sour and the flavour was really nice.
Triple portion kimchi jjigae. OHSUM! |
I really wanted the chicken to be good... But actually I was a little disappointed. We all agreed that we should have ordered a plain flavoured one which only had spring onion topping because both the sauces we picked were pretty underwhelming. They were super sweet and really didn't taste like how we expected... Just too sweet for my palate, I definitely prefer savoury flavours. I couldn't taste any garlic in the garlic mayo chicken and it tasted like it was drenched in condensed milk. It got a little sickly towards the end I think... But that might also have been due to me force drinking my beer because I felt obliged to, after really pushing for the beer tower! I guss I didn't enjoy my meal as much as I expected but I would still return to try the plain chicken and also their other snack foods and cocktails! They had a pretty comprehensive list of interesting drinks that I definitely would like to try! Alas, I may have to wait until I get a proper job before I can freely sample all the kooky cocktails to my heart's content ><
Slightly disappointing... not the KFC we were expecting when ordering Korean Fried Chicken... |

Is it a black cab? Or is it a tuk tuk? |
